Wisdom Teeth Removal

The third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, are the final set of molars that grow into the mouth. Most people do not have enough room to accommodate this extra set of teeth. Many times, wisdom teeth are impacted, which prevents them from coming in correctly, which can cause a lot of oral health problems.

At Oral Surgery Services, our goal is to provide our patients with a comfortable and safe treatment eliminating the risk of future issues caused by wisdom teeth. Our team of dedicated and qualified professionals makes it their goal to provide professional wisdom teeth removal and surgery in Gretna and Metairie.

Typically, our patients come in with pain in the jaw, swelling overlying the wisdom tooth, and crowding of the erupted teeth. As trusted oral surgeons in the Gretna and Metairie areas, Drs. Smith and Ferguson are board-certified specialists who can expertly extract wisdom teeth. The process begins with a clinical examination and X-ray to help determine if there is room for eruption and normal occlusion of the wisdom teeth. Our surgeons will only recommend surgery if these teeth are impacted in the jaw and not erupted.

Wisdom teeth removal surgery is best done by an oral surgeon because of their additional four to seven years of surgical training beyond dental school. Drs. Smith and Ferguson usually perform this surgery under light general anesthesia, providing the most comfortable and safest experience for our patients.

The Removal Process

If you or your child requires the removal of wisdom teeth, you will come to our office for a consultation first. Your oral surgeon will meet with you and review your medical and dental history, X-rays, and complete an oral examination. If 3D scans or additional X-rays are needed, they will be taken at this time as well. As experienced oral surgeons, Drs. Smith and Ferguson are highly trained in the extraction of wisdom teeth, including the safe administration of anesthesia. Oral Surgery Services offers several options for anesthesia to keep you comfortable during your procedure. Your anesthetic options will be discussed during your consultation. We will also provide you with pre- and post-operative care instructions. If you have any questions about your upcoming procedure, your consultation is the ideal time to ask.

Your second appointment to our office will be for your surgical procedure. Your oral surgeon will begin the procedure by administering the anesthetic option that was selected during your consultation. Once you are comfortable, your oral surgeon will surgically expose the teeth through the gums. They will then extract the tooth gently — it may be broken into smaller pieces for an easier procedure. Once your gums are stitched up and the anesthesia has worn off, you will rest and recuperate at home.

If you or your child requires wisdom teeth removal, look no further than Oral Surgery Services. Drs. Ferguson and Smith are highly experienced in wisdom teeth removal and will come up with a customized treatment plan to ensure you feel safe, comfortable, and informed throughout your treatment. We look forward to exceeding your expectations for treatment.
